Services for Students with Disabilities
The University of Nebraska-Lincoln takes pride in its diverse student population and is committed to providing all students the opportunity to take full advantage of its programs and facilities. In keeping with this philosophy, UNL strives to eliminate architectural and programmatic barriers that prevent qualified students with disabilities from obtaining a University education. Services are offered to promote and facilitate the integration of students with disabilities into the mainstream of academic life.
The level of responsibility regarding the provision of services changes after high school. While Section 504 and the ADA require postsecondary institutions to provide accommodative services to qualified students with disabilities, they do not require colleges and universities to alter their requirements for either admissions or for graduation. Note: if a student believes that a disability impacted his/her ability to successfully meet one of UNL's admission requirements, the student can submit an admission decision appeal to the Dean.
UNL is unable to provide any accommodation until a student takes the following two steps:
- The admitted student who needs accommodative services must self-identify. That means he or she must go to the Services for Students with Disabilities Office and request services.
- He or she must provide documentation of his or her disability. Documentation must be provided by a certified or licensed professional with the expertise necessary to make the determination. In order to provide the best possible accommodation, documentation dated within the last three years is most helpful and will be required for accommodation requests that require changes in academic programs such as substitutions or waivers of course requirements.
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) ensures the confidentiality of the student's documentation and limits access to appropriate University personnel. Accommodation services are provided through the Services for Students with Disabilities Office (SSD), 132 Canfield Administration Building, V/TDD (402) 472-3787.
