Melvin Jones Scholar Community
The Melvin Jones Scholar Community is a learning community offered by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln to promote academics, leadership, and community. This community is designed to develop and retain a diverse student body at Nebraska. Participants will not only live near each other in Abel Hall, but during their academic year will:
- Enroll in up to two courses with others in the scholar community
- Engage in regular discussions with faculty and staff
- Enjoy planned activities at least once every two weeks
- Experience educational, cultural and social Events
Academics
As a Jones Scholar, you will connect with faculty, staff and other students who share your academic interests. Being closely connected with other students will help you form informal study groups and receive support when class projects are due or exams are scheduled.
Leadership
Outside of the classroom, Melvin Jones Scholars actively seek enrichment through service, cultural experiences and outreach. Participating students are strongly encouraged to:
- Volunteer for group community service projects
- Attend Lied Center for Performing Arts cultural events
- Organize the learning community regional trip
- Play important student roles in selected University recruitment events
- Participate in Jones Scholars alumni student organization events
Community
Jones Scholars benefit from their ability to make connections early during their University experience. As a participant, you will:
- Know other students in your classes and in extracurricular activities, making it easier to get to know students with similar interests
- Have opportunities to explore your interests with faculty and staff
- Attend a variety of career-related events
- Will have opportunities to work with community leaders
Join
To become a Jones Scholars, you need to be admitted to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and pay your $250 enrollment deposit by May 1. Once you pay your enrollment deposit you will be mailed a housing contract. You can join the Melvin W. Jones Scholars in contract. The Melvin W. Jones Scholars Community is designed to support a diverse student body. All students are invited to apply.
